This is critical data for CRO. If your call-to-action button sits at 75% of the way down the page, but only 30% of visitors scroll that far, 70% of your visitors never see your CTA. That is not a conversion problem. That is a visibility problem.
Scroll maps also reveal content engagement. A sharp drop-off at a specific section means that section is causing visitors to lose interest. A plateau (steady color without significant drop-off) means visitors are engaged and reading through that content.
Move Maps (Mouse Tracking)
Move maps track cursor movement across the page. Move maps give you a reasonable proxy for where visitors are looking.
Move maps are most useful for identifying whether visitors are even reading your value proposition, whether they hover over elements expecting more information (like tooltips), and which sections of a long page receive the most visual attention.

There are several heatmap tools available, and I have used all the major ones in my audit work. Here is an honest assessment of each:
Microsoft Clarity (Free)
Microsoft Clarity is completely free with no traffic limits, which makes it the easiest starting point for any business. According to Microsoft's Clarity homepage, the tool is used on over 1.2 million websites globally. It provides click maps, scroll maps, and session recordings, plus a “rage click” detection feature that automatically flags sessions where visitors clicked repeatedly on non-responsive elements.
Clarity is what I recommend to small businesses who have never used heatmaps before. The setup takes less than five minutes, it integrates directly with GA4, and the session recording feature alone is worth the zero-dollar price tag.
Hotjar
Hotjar is the most well-known heatmap tool and offers heatmaps, session recordings, feedback polls, and surveys. According to Hotjar's published data, the platform is used by over 1.3 million websites across 180+ countries. The free plan includes up to 35 daily sessions. Paid plans start at $39/month for up to 100 daily sessions.
Hotjar's advantage is the combination of heatmaps with on-page surveys. You can place a feedback widget directly on a page and ask visitors why they did not convert. That qualitative data paired with heatmap visual data is an extremely powerful CRO combination.
Lucky Orange
Lucky Orange offers real-time heatmaps, session recordings, and a live chat feature. It is particularly useful for e-commerce sites because it tracks form analytics and conversion funnels natively. The entry-level plan starts at $32/month.
I use Lucky Orange less frequently than Clarity or Hotjar, but it has one standout feature: dynamic heatmaps that track interactions on elements that change state, like dropdown menus, tabs, and accordions. If your site uses a lot of interactive elements, Lucky Orange captures data that other tools miss.
How to Read Heatmap Data: What to Look For
Having a heatmap installed is step one. Knowing what to do with the data is where the actual optimization happens. Here are the patterns I look for on every audit:
Pattern 1: The False Bottom
A false bottom occurs when your page design includes a full-width section break, large image, or color change that makes visitors think the page has ended. The scroll map will show a dramatic drop-off at that point. Everything below the false bottom might as well not exist. The fix is straightforward: redesign the section break to visually indicate that more content follows, or move your most important content and CTAs above the false bottom line.
Pattern 2: Click Clustering on Non-Interactive Elements
If your click map shows significant click activity on images, subheadings, or non-linked text, visitors expect those elements to do something. During our work with TKTX Shop, heatmap data revealed that visitors were clicking on product images expecting them to zoom, but the zoom feature wasn't working on mobile. Visitors were tapping product photos repeatedly, getting no response, and leaving. That is a conversion leak that would never show up in Google Analytics alone.
The fix for TKTX was implementing a mobile-responsive image zoom and adding more product image angles. The heatmap made the problem impossible to miss.

I see this constantly on service business websites. The business owner writes a long, detailed description of their service, and the “Contact Us” button sits at the very bottom. The scroll map shows that only 20-25% of visitors ever reach it. The solution is adding multiple CTAs throughout the page, including one above the fold. According to the Baymard Institute's research on CTA placement, making the primary action persistently accessible (via sticky elements or repeated placement) significantly reduces friction in the conversion path.
Pattern 4: Navigation Confusion
Click maps on your navigation menu reveal which labels visitors understand and which they do not. If your menu says “Solutions” and almost nobody clicks it, but everyone clicks “Services,” you have a labeling problem. I worked with a home services business where heatmap data showed their “Get Started” button was getting fewer clicks than their “Pricing” link. Always compare mobile and desktop heatmaps separately. The behaviors are often dramatically different. Desktop visitors might scroll through your entire page and click a CTA near the bottom. Mobile visitors might scroll 40% of the way down and either convert or leave. Elements that are side by side on desktop stack vertically on mobile, which changes the scroll depth required to reach your conversion elements.
Session Recordings: The Qualitative Layer
Most heatmap tools also offer session recordings, which play back individual visitor sessions like a video. You see every scroll, every click, every hesitation. I watch 30-50 session recordings during every CRO audit, and they consistently surface insights that aggregated data misses.
Here is what to look for when watching session recordings:
- Hesitation patterns: The cursor hovers over an element for several seconds before moving away. The visitor was considering that action and decided against it.
- U-turn behavior: The visitor scrolls down, then scrolls back up to re-read something. This indicates confusion or the need for clarification.
- Form abandonment: Watching a visitor fill out three fields and then close the tab tells you exactly which field was the friction point. This pairs perfectly with form optimization strategies.
- Dead-end navigation: The visitor clicks through three or four pages, clearly looking for something, and eventually leaves without finding it.
Session recordings are not statistically significant on their own. You cannot watch five sessions and draw conclusions about all your visitors. Turning Heatmap Insights Into CRO Actions
Data is useless without action. Here is the framework I use to convert heatmap findings into specific website changes:
- If the scroll map shows your CTA is below the fold for most visitors: Add a sticky CTA or duplicate it higher on the page. Test whether a persistent floating button improves conversion rates without annoying visitors.
- If click maps show dead clicks on images or non-interactive elements: Make those elements interactive. Link product images to detail views. Make clickable-looking text actually link somewhere useful.
- If mobile and desktop heatmaps show dramatically different behavior: Treat them as separate optimization projects. What works on desktop may not work on mobile, and vice versa.
- If session recordings show repeated form abandonment at a specific field: Remove that field, make it optional, or provide helper text explaining why you need the information.
- If move maps show visitors ignoring your value proposition: Rewrite or redesign it. Make it shorter, bolder, and more visually prominent. Consider whether social proof elements placed near the value proposition might draw more attention to it.
How Often Should You Review Heatmap Data?
Heatmaps need volume to be meaningful. A page with 50 visits will not produce a useful heatmap. I recommend waiting until a page has at least 500-1,000 sessions worth of data before drawing conclusions.
For most small businesses with moderate traffic, that means reviewing heatmaps monthly or quarterly. For higher-traffic e-commerce sites, weekly reviews of key landing pages and product pages are appropriate. After any significant design change, reset your heatmap data and collect fresh data on the new design rather than mixing old and new interaction patterns.
Heatmaps and CRO: The Will Blochinger Photography Example
Not every heatmap insight is about fixing problems on e-commerce pages. During our engagement with Will Blochinger Photography, we used scroll map data to understand how visitors interacted with the portfolio gallery pages. The data showed that visitors who scrolled through at least 60% of the gallery page were 3x more likely to navigate to the booking page than those who bounced early.
This told us the portfolio content was doing its job as a trust-building and interest-generating asset, but we needed more visitors to engage with it deeply. The optimization was focused on the page entry experience: a stronger opening headline and a curated “best of” section at the top of the gallery that hooked visitors into scrolling further. It is a different application of heatmap data than e-commerce, but the principle is the same: see where attention drops off, and fix the experience at that point.
Common Mistakes When Using Heatmaps
After years of heatmap analysis across CRO projects and beyond, here are the mistakes I see most often:
- Drawing conclusions from too little data. A heatmap based on 50 sessions is noise, not signal. Wait for statistical volume.
- Looking at heatmaps in isolation. Heatmaps show you behavior, not intent. Always combine with GA4 data and, when possible, direct user feedback.
- Ignoring mobile heatmaps. If more than half your traffic is mobile, your mobile heatmap is more important than your desktop one.
- Only looking at the homepage. Your homepage is rarely your most important conversion page. Focus heatmap analysis on your highest-traffic landing pages and the pages immediately before your conversion point.
- Not segmenting by traffic source. Visitors from Google Ads behave differently than organic visitors. If your heatmap tool supports segmentation, use it.
